In character animation artwork that you create must appear to think on its own. Every gesture, every expression, and every action should express a thought process. The definition of ‘acting’ is ‘movement with a purpose’.

Animated Characters may show their inner thought processes through changes in their outer appearance. BUBBLE TEA TIME by Zhuolin Liu (© 2012 Zhuolin Liu) has a simple story—a little girl does not want to share her delicious bubble tea drink with a little boy. The boy makes increasingly desperate (and animated) attempts to get the drink.

It is possible to make BUBBLE TEA TIME in live action, but even with the same story it would be a completely different movie. These children are not realistic in either design or movement, but they are believable. It is this quality that distinguishes the best animated films.

CHAPTER TWO describes how the filmmaker developed the story and acting performances through a combination of storyboard, thumbnails, and editing.
