charter school - A publicly funded school, often managed by a private company contracted by government, that is able to operate more independently of the school system in order to try new educational methods.


D

digital divide - The division between those having or not having technologically advanced devices such as personal computers and smartphones that provide access to information and the ability to communicate with people almost anywhere in the world.


F

functional illiteracy - The lack of the level of reading or writing skills necessary to carry out everyday tasks.


M

magnet school - A free public elementary or high school run by school districts or groups of school districts that has an attractive central educational focus such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or fine and performing arts.


N

news objectivity - The extent to which news personnel and institutions present stories truthfully and without bias to the public.

newsworthiness - The extent to which a story has the qualities, such as significance, proximity, prominence, human interest, and timing, to merit being presented to the public through news media.


S

school segregation - The division of students by race, ethnicity, and/or class into different schools.

school voucher programs - Programs that provide taxpayer funds to the parents of school children to use in paying all or partial tuition at private (or in some cases public) schools of their choice.

student movement - A social movement in which students are the main or leading participants.
