AIDS - Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

birth rate - The number of live births per 1,000 members of a population per year.


C

child mortality rate - The number of children dying under five years old per 1,000 live births per year.


D

death (mortality) rate - Number of deaths per 1,000 persons in a population per year.

deinstitutionalization - The shift to treating persons designated as mentally ill in settings other than as residents in mental hospitals.

demographic transition - The shift from high birth rates and high death rates to low birth rates and low death rates.


E

epidemiological transition - The shift in the cause of death in a society from being predominantly infectious disease to chronic disease.

infant mortality rates - The number of deaths during the first year of life per 1,000 live births per year.


M

mental illness - Any one of a number of thinking or mood disorders resulting in impaired functioning and/or debilitating feelings of distress.
