  10. The Treasury of the Athenians. It is uncertain whether this treasury was built before or after the battle of Marathon, but Persian weapons were definitely displayed on a triangular base next to the building

  13. The base of the Tripod of Plataea. The tripod was dedicated by each of the 31 Greek states which had taken part in the final defeat of the Persians in 479 BCE. It was made of gold and stood at between 7 and 8 metres. The column formed by three bronze serpents twined together, on which the cauldron was mounted, was inscribed with the names of all 31 states

  26. The gymnasium. According to legend, it was at this spot on Mt Parnassos that Odysseus was wounded by a wild boar in a hunt (Odyssey 19. 393-466). This left him with the scar by which his old nurse Eurycleia recognised him when he returned to his palace in Ithaca
