Chapter 8 looks into the distinct society which was ancient Sparta. It starts by examining the very limited number of sources and the problems posed by this. It then moves on to reconstruct a history of Sparta from the Archaic Age to the Hellenistic Age, covering the mysterious figure of Lycurgus along the way. Following this, there are investigations into the lives of different social groups in Sparta – male citizens, female citizens, perioeci and helots. There are also sections on Spartan government and the Spartan legacy.
