Welcome to the companion website for Literacy for Learning: A Handbook of Content-Area and Disciplinary Literacy Practices for Middle and High School Teachers, Second Edition by Gregory Berry and Charlene K. Aldrich.

Literacy for Learning supports a literacy model of instruction in all content areas: required, elective, and workforce based. The book/website publication empowers teachers with research and practice; the combination encourages teachers AND administrators to advocate for and require daily, independent content-area reading. The friendly format leads teachers in the paradigm shift necessary to develop a permanent literacy mindset. The result? Students who retain content knowledge and apply their learning in future scenarios – both of which increase the probability of improving overall literacy proficiency.

The research-based content-area literacy strategies from Dr. Berry’s first edition are available through this website for all who purchase our second edition. Many of the original strategies now extend into the practice of disciplinary literacy. In addition, technology resources have been updated and generalized to avoid outdatedness. A final perk are the content-specific suggestions which can be located through the table of contents.

We hope that you will find them easily accessible to download and print individually as you experiment with content-area reading and writing in your classrooms. Although these are PDFs and not available for editing, we encourage you to find ways to personalize them in your area as a way to make them very purposeful to your students. Purpose drives engagement in learning; learning leads to literacy proficiency. Enjoy!
