Briant, P., From Cyrus to Alexander (Warsaw IN: Eisenbrauns, 2003)
A wonderful, scholarly account of the Persian Empire, written in French but translated into English. This book is very expensive and so most likely used in a library.

Brunt, P., 'The Hellenic League Against Persia', Historia 2:135-63 (1953)
This key article about the nature of the Hellenic League can be found at JSTOR.

Cartledge, P., Thermopylae: The Battle That Changed the World (London: Vintage, 2007)
An account of this famous battle by one of the foremost Greek historians in the world today. 

Cawkwell, G., The Greek Wars (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2006)
An excellent, detailed analysis of the Persian Wars from a scholarly perspective. Best read by the teacher and its ideas condensed for pupils. 

Gould, J., Herodotus (London: Bloomsbury Academic, 1989)
The classic undergraduate introduction to Herodotus as a historian. 

Herodotus, The Histories, trans. Aubrey de Sélincourt (London: Penguin, 1996)
A classic translation of Herodotus, with an excellent introduction assessing his method and aims. 

Holland, T., Persian Fire (London: Abacus, 2006)
An exciting and detailed introduction to the Persian Wars for the general reader. 

Krentz, P., The Battle of Marathon (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2011)
A scholarly analysis of what actually happened at Marathon. 

Kuhrt, A., The Persian Empire (Abingdon: Routledge, 2007)
A tour de force: all the relevant sources for the period. A simply wonderful resource.

Lazenby, G., The Defence of Greece (Liverpool: Aris & Phillips, 1993)
A very scholarly and detailed account of the battles of the Persian war from a military perspective. Best read by the teacher and condensed for pupils.
