Discussion Points and Questions

  • Identify situations associated with fear. Contrast some of the ways in which ideas of fear differ: for example, a physical threat of falling versus a social fear of being laughed at. Next, contrast social ideas of love: for example, falling in love versus love of a pet.
  • Are emotional feelings such as adoration and pride self-evident in family relationships? Unspoken emotional feelings in social situations can be hard to discern since people often hide their feelings. Can you think of an instance where you could not recognize someone’s emotional feelings and you had to guess?
  • Characters in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull know each other well and the dialogue reveals patience and impatience when others express emotional feelings. Can you find character interactions that reveal familiarity? Which characters might be described as experiencing a mood of depression?
  • Can you think of a performance that induced bodily sensations such as tingling or holding the breath, or some other noticeable affect?
  • Consider whether attendance at a recent live or screen performance created a mood effect for you. Did it stay with you afterwards?
