Sound aims to think through the many elements of sound that inform theatre and performance and to provide critical entry points for engaging the breadth of theory across historical and disciplinary perspectives concerned with the nature of sound. The introduction takes stock of how theatre theory has thought about sound; as well, it considers ‘the sonic turn’ in the early twenty-first century that has seen the rapid growth of the interdisciplinary field of sound studies.
