Discussion Questions

  • 1. Based on the performance descriptions in this section’s three case studies, what other theoretical approaches might we use to understand their engagements with space? See if you can find at least one per case study: Kim’s analyses are by no means exhaustive!
  • 2. Download a copy of And While London Burns and have a listen. If you are in the London area, find time to do the walk. (It takes about 75 minutes, plus travel time to and from Bank tube station.) If you are not in the London area, find a route in your community you can comfortably walk, with stops, in a 75-minute period, and “layer” the audio walk onto it. What new insights emerge for you from this collision of recorded and lived spaces?
  • 3. In this section’s case studies, we explored economics (capitalism), gender issues (women’s experiences under patriarchy), and race issues (racism against black bodies in the theatre) all as functions of space. Can you think of other performance works (scripts, live performances, or films) where these or similar social issues can be understood and interrogated through a critical engagement with space? Try to create a “case study” of your own, using your chosen performance work in conjunction with two or three of the theoretical approaches outlined in Section One.
