There are three common forms of design document. The one-sheet, the 10-page and the Game Design document (GDD). The one-sheet is the ‘resume’ of the game, it’s almost like an advert for your game – all the exciting best bits without too much detail. The 10-page is more like a PowerPoint presentation in document form. More detail than the 1-sheet but less than the GDD. It is the sort of document you would present to non-technical people (such as those funding your game) externally and internally (talking about programming terms to the animator or artist may be redundant). The GDD is the most expansive document mostly for internal use by the development team. This is the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the game you are making, it’s an exhaustive list of every element in your game.
