Chapter 5

Introductory discussion: (beginning of chapter)

  • The Amuse Bouche section of this chapter prompts students to identify their comfort food.
    • Discussion of comfort foods provides an avenue to review concepts from earlier in the textbook as well as from earlier classes.
    • From earlier classes – ask students to recall brain processes and chemicals that influence the experience of emotion and pleasure.
    • From earlier chapters:
      • Chapter 1: How might culture or identity influence the types of comfort foods a person identifies or enjoys?
      • Chapter 2: Encourage students to brainstorm operationalizations of comfort food and pleasure.
      • Chapter 3: Do comfort foods provide specific functional effects similar to those identified in this chapter?
      • Chapter 4: What is the evolutionary explanation for certain foods influencing emotions?

Chapter 5 Learning Objectives

  • Apply the fundamental principles in biopsychology:
    • Demonstrate the three principles of nervous system function in ingestive behavior
    • Understand and explain the role of the nervous system and the endocrine system in eating
    • Contrast the perspectives of motivation and recognize contributions to eating
  • Describe metabolism and homeostasis:
    • Recognize the role of each macronutrient in energy reservoirs and metabolism
    • Evaluate the homeostatic perspective and set-point assumption for regulation of eating behavior
  • Explain the function of hunger and satiety signals:
    • Diagram relationships between these signals to note their origin, location of action, and interactions
    • Summarize the contributions and connections of various brain areas to the regulation of eating.
    • Integrate evidence to describe the relationship between self-control, mood, and eating
    • Synthesize the role of experience and pleasure in the regulation of feeding
