2. Extend your understanding

Read the following article:
Ponciano, L., and A. Shabazian (2012), ‘Interculturalism: Addressing Diversity in Early Childhood’, Dimensions of Early Childhood, 40(1): 23-30. Available online: https://www.southernearlychildhood.org/upload/pdf/Interculturalism___Addressing_Diversity_in_Early_Childhood___Leslie_Ponciano_and_Ani_Shabazian.pdf (accessed 23 January 2018)

The authors state that critical dialogue about intercultural understanding must begin in the teacher education program and reflection is a means of think critically about oneself and others. Reflect on your own experiences working, volunteering, or engaging in everyday interactions with members of a diverse population as described in this chapter (markers of difference). What have you learned from these experiences? What have you identified as areas you need to learn more about in order to teach children from diverse backgrounds?
