BBC History - The Democratic Experiment
A simple overview of Athenian democracy.

Ancient History Encyclopedia
Detailed information (but in a readable format) about all aspects of the Athenian Democracy. See in particular:
Athenian Democracy (general)
Herodotus
Thucydides
Aristotle
Solon
Cleisthenes
Ostracism

Demos
This is very much a site for those who enjoy the Explore Further activities in the book. It consists of a series of detailed articles about all aspects of Athenian democracy (although beware – a lot of the material relates to the period after 483 BC).

Athenian Agora Excavations
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens has produced this very useful site. It demonstrates how the archaeological excavations of the Athenian agora have informed our understanding of Athenian political history.

In Search of the Greeks (2nd ed.) Companion Website
James Renshaw’s In Search of the Greeks also has a very useful companion website with activities and further information. The sections on Chapters 1 (general Greek history) and 6 (Athenian democracy) will be of particular interest. Do check out the images and timelines too.

Podcasts

The following BBC Radio 4 In Our Time episodes might be of interest:
Thucydides
Democracy
(This deals only in part with Athenian democracy. It includes a lot of information about the development of democracy in the contemporary West.)

Michael Portillo’s three-part BBC Radio 4 programme Democracy on Trial deals with a lot of issues relevant to ancient and modern democracy.
