Weekly and daily scheduling

Activity 2 of the book chapter on Time Management provides guidance for creating personalised daily and weekly schedules. This enables you to keep track of all the competing demands on your precious time. You can allocate appropriate times for all of these at the start of each week on the blank template shown in Box 2 of the book, and reproduced below. Follow the instructions given after the table.

1. Fill in slots for all of your essential daily commitments, i.e. class attendance, eating, exercising/relaxing, sleeping.

2. Schedule in independent study sessions, i.e. away from class, throughout the week at a ratio of two hours independent learning to each hour of class study (See Activity 2, Stage 2).

3. Keep two or three hours of contingency time in each day, i.e. blank slots. These allow flexibility for life being unpredictable!

4. Ensure that you are balancing study with leisure time (See Box 3 for a fully-worked example).

Effective time management depends on some trial and error, probably over several weeks, to personalise a system that combines activities and timings in the best way for you. So keep trying out variations of this approach until you have a schedule that feels realistic and empowering.
