Chapter 2 - About Correctness: What is Good Language?

1. Look at this humorous take on the development of French from Latin:

In as much detail as you can, describe what it tells us about the processes of sound change that led to modern standard French. On what does the joke depend?

2. What does 'bare' mean?

Look at this extract from a Twitter exchange opened by music artist JME about the meaning of 'bare' as in 'bare of us'. What is Jack not getting about standard and non-standard language?

JME: I met Jeremy Corbyn today, and explained why bare of us don't vote.

Jack: What does "Bare of us" mean? Do you mean none or many?

Sal: It mean a lot of us.

Jack: OK. Why not just say that then?
