Welcome to the learning resources section. This page of the website features video interviews with HR practitioners and managers from a range of organizations. The practitioners address each of the questions in the Spotlight on skills features in the textbook, giving their perspective on the various issues outlined therein and providing some real-life examples from their own experience to provide you with some guidance. To maximise this resource, you should first attempt to answer the questions in the book for yourself and then watch the videos. The idea behind the Spotlight on skills video and text feature is to encourage you to develop your people management skills, giving you the opportunity to identify and diagnose real-world HR problems and develop possible solutions to overcome them.

Jemma Carty

Jemma Carty has a Masters in Human Resource Management from the University of Limerick. She has completed Train the Trainer and is a qualified instructor in Belbin Team Roles, Development Dimensions International Leadership Courses and Situational Leadership. She is also experienced in Enterprise Excellence with a particular focus in cultural change and continuous improvement. Jemma has over 15 years’ HR experience gained from her time working within the Automotive and Medical Device industry.

Suzanne McElligott
Suzanne has worked in HR for over 12 years. During her career she worked with Dell Computers as EMEA Programme Manager responsible for working with a global team to implement global strategic initiatives.

Declan Deegan

Declan has over 20 years’ experience in the area of HR. He has worked for Wang, EMC and with Dell Computers for 21 years in roles including Recruitment Manager, Senior Human Resources Manager and EMEA Business Ethics Manager. He was also the HR manager for the overseas facility in Poland. He is currently Head of Human Resources, Education and Learning and Development at Milford Care Centre in Limerick.

Noreen Clifford
Noreen has more than 18 years’ experience in the areas of education, career development and consultancy. She is a fully qualified trainer and career coach and has a strong interest in people and their development. She is client centred and results focused and has worked with a large variety of clients, including large multi-national organisations and SMEs. Noreen is qualified in the administration, scoring and analysis of a variety of psychometric instruments in the areas of ability, personality, careers, and leadership development. As a Consultant for the past 10 years she has specialised in the use of psychometric tools in the areas of recruitment, personal and leadership development, outplacement support and career assessment. She has worked successfully with individuals of all ages in career assessment, planning and transition.

Brian Naiker
Brian is the Director, Centre for Online & Distance Education, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. He has a track record spanning 26 years of outstanding performance and accomplishment in the rapidly changing and dynamic environment of learning and higher education. He is vastly experienced in distance and online learning, business development, new programing, corporate training, continuing education and revenue generation within higher education. Brian has substantial experience across the entire education and training spectrum. He is an adept analyst of the higher education industry globally, focused on innovative practices in higher education management with a strong emphasis on revenue generation, returns on investment and sustainability.

Noelette Ensko
Noelette Ensko is the Site HR Leader for Johnson & Johnson, Vision Care in Ireland. Having started her early career in HR with the US Multi-National Westinghouse, she moved to AST Europe during the period 1994-1998 and enjoyed a 6 month assignment at their Global HQ in Irvine California. On returning to Ireland, Noelette joined Wyndham Worldwide (RCI Ireland) a green field operation initially as HR Director (IRL) before transferring to their European HQ in London where she worked as Group EMEA HR Director for six years. In 2010, Noelette joined Sitel Corporation based-in Brussels as HR Director for Northern Europe before returning to Ireland where she joined Johnson & Johnson in 2012. Noelette holds a Diploma in Human Resources from the University of Limerick, and is currently undergoing a MSc in HRM with the University of Limerick.

Clodagh Blighe
Clodagh Blighe has over 15 years’ experience in General Management, Customer Service, Training and Human Resource Management, across the Hospitality and IT services sectors, in Switzerland and Ireland. Clodagh is currently Human Resources Manager at MICROS-Fidelio Ireland Ltd., home to their Technical Support Centre for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Clodagh spent a number of years working with Leading Hotels of the World in Switzerland and with Great Southern Hotels in Ireland, before joining MICROS 10 years ago. Previously as Training Manager, she was responsible for the analysis and implementation of all internal and external training initiatives at MICROS in Galway. Clodagh is passionate about Knowledge Management, Learning and Management Development and her MSc thesis focused on designing a framework for the acquisition and sharing of tacit knowledge. Clodagh holds a BA in Management, a MSc in Human Resource Management from UL and is currently studying to qualify as a Business, Executive and Personal Coach from the Coach Institute of Ireland.

Sarah O’HeaSarah has a Degree in Microbiology, and an HDIP in Education from Trinity College, Dublin and a MSc in Training & Education Management from Dublin City University. She has five years’ experience working as a teacher for Leaving Certificate Biology and Junior Certificate Mathematics and Science. She has been working for MSD since 2003 and has held a number of senior roles in the areas of Teaching, Learning & Development, High Performance and Manufacturing.

Linda Edgeworth
Linda Edgeworth is a member of the HR Team at Cook Medical, Limerick. Having started her career as a Teaching Assistant in UL, Linda then moved into various Recruiter roles before taking up a HR Manager role in the contact centre industry. In recent years Linda has been working with Cook Medical within the medical device industry. Linda holds a BBS Degree (Personnel Management Option) from the University of Limerick and regularly delivers lectures to students on evening programmes within the College.

Jackie O’Regan
Jackie O’Regan is a Learning and Organisation Development professional, and adjunct lecturer, with over 15 years industry experience. Primarily, Jackie’s career has been spent in the technology sector, including EMC Corporation, Apple Computers and Motorola.
Jackie holds a B.Comm. (Management) from University College Cork and a MSc in Work and Organisational Psychology from the University of Limerick. Jackie’s professional and academic interest lies in the areas of employee engagement and talent management. She has worked on project teams driving major organizational change initiatives, and has held global management roles in learning and organizational development in both EMC and Apple Computers.
Based on her industry work on employee satisfaction and engagement, Jackie drew together a team from EMC Corporation and Cork Institute of Technology, to develop and launch the world’s first Master’s Degree in Cloud Computing, launched in 2011 and recently named among the top ten online courses in the world by Forbes Magazine. Based on this successful collaboration between industry and academia, Jackie has also project managed postgraduate course development with colleges including Northeastern University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the USA, and with University College Cork and the Irish Management Institute.

Marie Connolly
Marie Connolly is HR Manager, University of Limerick, Ireland and has over 20 years’ experience in leading, driving and implementing key change initiatives within the Higher Education, Public and semi-state sectors. Marie’s areas of expertise include performance management, leadership development, career and personal development, business transformation and change management, Mentoring, quality management and the development of competency frameworks. A creative self-starter and strong project manager Marie possesses excellent leadership, people management and interpersonal skills and has had responsibility for managing teams of varying sizes.
Marie’s proven track record of achievement in driving significant change initiatives and influencing strategy includes the establishment of the Learning and Development function within the Human Resources Division, University of Limerick, as a recognised critical resource and a centre of excellence.
Marie an accredited Executive Coach with a Master’s Degree in Education is currently pursuing a DBA in Higher Education Management in the University of Bath. Marie is a member of the University of Limerick’s Management Council and holds positions on a number of committees across the Higher Education Sector in Ireland.

Philip Ducie
Philip is a graduate of Waterford IT where he completed his undergraduate BBS specialising in HRM in 2001. In 2013, Philip completed the MSc in HRM in University of Limerick. Philip has worked in middle and senior HR Management roles across Retail, FMCG and Agri business industries in both unionised and non-unionised environments over the last 14 years. During this period, as HR Manager, he has faced many employee relations and IR challenges through the boom and subsequent recession eras. Philip has observed the increased importance of the HR function and the role it plays as a strategic business partner and change agent in the organisational setting. Philip has particular interest in the IR/ER field and talent management, the latter he feels is the single biggest challenge for organisations over the coming years.
