6. Teaching Speaking in a Second or Foreign Language

EXAMPLE OF A PROCESS: SPEECH-MAKING

Click here to download an example of a slideshow used to support a five-minute presentation about a process – in this case, how to make guacamole. But there are two main problems with this slideshow.

First, it is too long and too detailed. The talk was only supposed to be five minutes long, so after I give this talk, my students do pair work and then give me advice about what can be cut.

Second, the text is given in complete sentences. I want my students to “talk” extemporaneous speeches instead of reading them aloud, so another revision is to change the text in this slideshow to brief bullet points (phrases or clauses instead of complete sentences). Depending on how much time you have for the lesson, you can share the slideshow with the students (if they have digital devices or give them written copies of the text as a handout, which they can then revise.

EXAMPLES OF DISCOURSE MARKERS USED IN GIVING PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATIONS

Click here to download a chart that represents many important discourse markers that are used in giving speeches in English.

You can share this chart with your students, or – better yet – give them a hand-out with the categories but only one or two example words or phrases for each category. Have them generate the words and phrases. The produce the list that they have generated.
