Resources for students

Welcome to the Critical Statistics website! This site provides the following resources to help you get the most out of the book:

  1. The Critical Statistics Hall of Shame. In the modern media, there is a dubious statistic born every minute. Here are a bunch more I just couldn’t find space for in the book .
  2. A space to upload your own examples. If reading the book has inspired you to keep an eye out for misleading statistics yourself, here is a space for to submit your own examples .
  3. Materials and guidance for selected end-of-chapter exercises. Several of the end-of-chapter exercises ask you to look at real data. This section of the website contains links to these datasets. It also contains step-by-step guides for anything that needs to be done in Excel.
  4. Extra exercises. In case the exercises in the book aren’t enough, here are some extra exercises you can try to test your knowledge.
  5. Updated links. The examples in the book are based on real media stories. In many cases I’ve provided links to these stories, so you can see them for yourself. However, the internet never stands still, and a link that works today might not work tomorrow. This section of the website therefore maintains a list of up-to-date links. If you find that any of the links here don’t work, please let us know.
  6. Other resources. Anything that’s mentioned in the book that doesn’t have a home elsewhere, you will find here.
