Chapter 6: CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

1. If the main objective of corporations is to maximize profits, why should they expend resources (that would otherwise go to shareholders) to advance social causes? What do you think are the strongest arguments on both sides of this issue?

2. It might be argued that there are two moralities, individual morality and collective morality (see TB 6A, Section 6.5), and that corporations are governed by collective morality.  But if collective morality legitimizes conduct that seems wrong by individual morality (e.g., profiting from sweatshops in underdeveloped countries), which should take precedence, and why?

3. Do you consider this a defensible objection to the view that corporations should assume social responsibilities: corporate decision-makers aren’t qualified to make the complex moral judgments that such responsibilities require? (see Section 6.9) Why or why not?
