About the authors

John M. Davis is a Professor of Education at the University of Strathclyde. John was previously Professor of Childhood Inclusion at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on the areas of childhood, disability, inclusion and social justice. John’s research has utilized participatory childhood research methods to support parents, children and young people to contribute to creative processes of change in education, early years, health and social services. He is adept at promoting innovative approaches in integrated and multi-professional children and family services.

Deborah Fry is a Professor of International Child Protection Research at Moray House School of Education and Sport, a child protection expert and social epidemiologist and is the Director of Data at Childlight – Global Child Safety Institute at the University of Edinburgh. Deborah Fry undertakes primary research to measure the magnitude, drivers and consequences of child sexual exploitation and abuse, barriers and enablers to appropriate responses and the effectiveness of existing interventions. Deborah is also the academic lead for the University’s Long-Term Agreement with UNICEF on child protection research, administrative data, and data training. 

Kristina Konstantoni is a Senior Lecturer in Childhood Studies at Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh. Kristina is a member of Childhood and Youth Studies, the co-founder and co-lead of the Early Years Research, Policy and Practice Group, the co-director and co-founder of the Anti-Racist Early Years Collective and a member of RACE.ED. Kristina’s research interests include children’s rights, childhoods and intersectionality; children’s human rights in informal learning public play spaces like community and business play-cafés; and children and young people’s human rights and participation in research, practice and policy-making. She works both in Scotland and with cross-national partners in such places as Greece, Brazil, Eswatini, South Africa, Palestine, and Germany.

Marlies Kustatscher is a Senior Lecturer in Childhood Studies at Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh. Marlies Kustatscher is a member of Childhood and Youth Studies and a Co-Convenor of the Race and Inclusivity in Global Education Network (RIGEN). Her research interests include childhood and intersectionality, children’s rights and participation, and emotions. Her work draws on interdisciplinary, arts-based approaches to activism and change with children and young people. Marlies currently works on projects on these themes with colleagues in Brazil, Colombia, Eswatini, Palestine, Scotland and South Africa.

M Catherine Maternowska is a Professor of Violence Prevention for Young People at Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh, UK. She is a medical anthropologist working in the field of public health. For the last three decades she has focused on structural determinants of health and violence as well as violence prevention and response for both children and women, including how best to provide quality services where human and financial resources are scarce. Her experience with violence prevention survey work, programming and practice, evaluation and policymaking spans four continents (Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe).

E Kay M Tisdall is a Professor of Childhood Policy, Childhood and Youth Studies at Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh. Kay Tisdall’s policy, academic and teaching work is centred around childhood studies and children’s human rights. She undertakes collaborative research with children, young people and adults on such as areas as children affected by domestic abuse, family law, inclusive pedagogy for young children, young people’s mental health, and children’s participation and activism. She is involved in a number of partnership projects, with teams in countries ranging from Brazil, Canada, Eswatini, India, Palestine, and South Africa. 

Laura Weiner is a PhD candidate at Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh. Her doctoral research explores how young activists construct skills, knowledge, and values developed in youth activist group spaces. Her research interests include children and young people’s activism and participation, civic and citizenship education, informal learning spaces and equity in education.
