Chapter 4: How well does online learning work at scale?

This chapter presents the features of scaled up online learning that are critical to the professionals’ capacity to learn online. In-depth online interviews with MOOC participants, were conducted to elicit their experiences of learning online through MOOCs to guide online learning design. Using a participatory approach, interview participants were invited to create repertory grids on an interactive whiteboard to explore the ways they were construed their relationship to online learning. The interviews produced 5 themes that have implications for MOOC design: deep learning; discussion and social learning; applied learning; digital engagement as inclusive interactive learning; learning design. Supported by examples from the interviews, this chapter presents an evidence-led approach to the design features to create meaningful learning experiences for scaled up online learning.
