Chapter 14: Giving employers what they want

The Disability Confident employer scheme

This a Government sponsored program that encourages employers to be more accessible to people with disabilities. In order to find out if specific organizations are involved, look for the logo on their websites (there are three levels: ‘Committed’, ‘Employer’ and ‘Leader’).

Analysing job applications

You can never get enough experience in assessing what individual employers require so you can target your applications. Have a go in the exercise below by identifying the experience, skills, commitment and knowledge required in the following advert. The answers are provided below.

Advert

We are looking for an experienced graduate with skills in leading groups of children in outdoor activities. The children on our programmes are aged between six and twelve and we like to give them a safe, engaging, stimulating forest experience. You should be aware of your responsibilities to child safety, be able to plan detailed risk assessments and enjoy motivating children to learn in an outdoor setting.

  • Experience: The text doesn’t define what experience is required so it’s up to you to relate anything you’ve done to the role (i.e. try to demonstrate the relevance of all past experiences).
  • Skills: Leading groups of children in outdoor settings; ensuring safety of 6-12 year olds; engaging children in forest experiences (whatever they are!); planning detailed risk assessments.
  • Commitment: Enjoy motivating children in outdoor settings.
  • Knowledge: What children forest experiences are; child safety; risk assessments

Proving your skills

How to prove some commonly requested skills:

A skills diagram. The word "Organisation" branches into to two boxes. The first one says "How you demonstrate the skill: Planning ahead, continually assessing your progress and adjusting your project parameters accordingly." The second box says. A specific example of when you demonstrated the skill:Developing a simple robot at university. Beneath this, the word "Problem-solving" branches into another two boxes. The first of these contains the text: "How you demonstrate the skill: Defining the problem, researching the issues, testing possible solutions and choosing the best route forward." The second one contains the text "A specific example of when you demonstrated the skill: Raising footfall in the shop where you work."
